What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is created from carbon using specialised technology.

The two main production methods are High Pressure High Temperature and Chemical Vapour Deposition. Both methods create actual diamond crystal rather than a diamond imitation.

A lab-grown diamond should therefore not be confused with cubic zirconia, crystal or moissanite. Those materials may resemble a diamond, but they have different chemical and physical properties.

A high-quality lab-grown diamond can offer the qualities buyers usually look for in a diamond:

  • brilliance and fire;
  • hardness and durability;
  • high colour and clarity grades;
  • precise cutting and symmetry;
  • independent grading.

Can You See the Difference?

In most cases, the origin of a diamond cannot reliably be determined by looking at it with the naked eye.

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be colourless, highly transparent and exceptionally brilliant. Both can also contain internal characteristics and variations in colour or quality.

Reliable identification requires specialist knowledge and appropriate gemmological equipment. This is one reason why an independent grading report is so important.

The report records whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown and documents its individual quality characteristics.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond created through a technological growth process rather than a geological process.

It is not a simulated diamond and it is not simply a material designed to look like one.

Why Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Less Expensive?

Natural diamonds are restricted by geological availability, recovery, sorting and an extensive international supply chain.

Laboratory diamonds can be produced under controlled conditions. As production technology has improved and availability has increased, prices have become considerably more accessible.

A lab-grown diamond will therefore usually allow you to choose:

  • a larger centre stone;

  • a higher clarity grade;
  • or a more detailed ring design;

without entering the price range of a comparable natural diamond.

The lower price does not automatically mean lower visual quality. It primarily reflects a different origin, availability and supply structure.

Which Diamond Offers the Best Appearance?

Appearance depends more on the quality of the individual diamond than on whether it is natural or laboratory-grown.

Important factors include:

  • proportions;

A poorly proportioned diamond can appear dull regardless of its origin. A carefully selected diamond can appear bright, balanced and lively.

Which Option Gives You More for Your Budget?

A lab-grown diamond will usually provide more visible size or higher specifications within the same budget.

  • a centre stone of at least 1.00 carat;
  • D–E colour;
  • VVS clarity;
  • solid 18K gold;
  • independent grading;

will generally find more suitable options among lab-grown diamonds.

A client who assigns greater emotional value to natural rarity may deliberately choose a smaller or differently graded natural diamond within the same budget.

Neither decision is wrong. The two choices simply prioritise different forms of value.

Is a Lab-Grown Diamond the Same as Cubic Zirconia?

No. Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulant with a different composition and different physical properties. A lab-grown diamond is actual diamond crystal.

Is a Lab-Grown Diamond as Hard as a Natural Diamond?

Lab-grown and natural diamonds share essentially the same physical properties. Both are suited to jewellery intended for regular wear, although every fine jewellery piece should still be treated with care.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Independently Graded?

Can a Jeweller Tell Whether a Diamond Is Lab-Grown?

Reliable identification generally requires appropriate specialist equipment or gemmological laboratory testing. Appearance alone is not a dependable method.

Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Retain Its Value?

Neither an engagement ring nor an individual diamond should be purchased on the assumption of a guaranteed financial return. Future resale value can vary significantly and depends on market conditions, specifications, condition and demand.
